Fossil Fighters Frontier is the 3rd game in the Fossil
Fighter series. There were many changes compare to the first two games but some
of it was not for the better. This review is mainly on the changes/differences,
and the features of the game.
One of the three maps, they all look like this in design. Never tried multiplayer. |
Due to the advances in technology, this game is set after
the first two games. Without any spoilers, the story is great. I was more
absorbed in the story than anything else. There are a few questionable elements
in the game but it is fiction so I'll let it slide. After beating the game
(credits roll), there are a bunch of quests to recruit people to be paleo pals
and super paleo pals. This delves into some back story for each character.
Have to wait until Friday to finish seven scramble. It's currently Wednesday. |
Battling with vivosaurs is very repetitive in Frontier. In the other two games, the player had 3 vivosaurs to command and control in battle. In this game, the player has to pick up to two other pals to fight alongside with. This is incredibly frustrating in tournaments since the player cannot control the other two vivosaurs. Sometimes, the other two vivosaurs will attack different enemy vivosaurs when the most obvious way to win is to attack one at a time. What's worse is when the enemy exercises this tactic and my team does not.
All battles CANNOT be avoided. There used to be a decline battle feature but since it's rogue vivosaurs, it would have been nice for a run feature. The battle is on a 3x3 grid and alternates who gets to go. Speed matters on who gets to go first, and I never seen all three of my vivosaurs go before all of the opponents. I have seen two go in a row but never three.
There is a automatic battle feature. This is handy for all those rogue vivosaur battles and tournament battles. The tournaments consists of two types, Seven Scramble and Fossil Open. Seven Scramble depends on the day of the week which type of tournament it is. There are up to 5 stars in the difficulty of Seven Scramble. A certain amount in each one has to be won to increase the player's class. Fossil Open consists of tournaments with a rule. It can be the type of vivosaur, specific region of the vivosaur, survival, etc.
The main change in what decides who wins a battle are items. Up to four items can be equipped per vehicle. The items can be used a limited amount of time until a refill is needed. These items can be spammed during the attack in battle. I find this to be annoying sometimes but it is necessary for final boss. The items can help but it can also be a hindrance against other fighters since they also have items to spam.
Digging - Gimmick
The gimmick in Fossil Fighters has been digging out fossils. Frontier took a different step compare to the other two games. This time, everyone is in a buggy (vehicle) that has drilling equipment on it. This allows fossils to be excavated out in the field. As great as this sounds, the problem lies with rogue vivosaurs attacking and causing the fossil to be lost. Even if the vivosaur was defeated, it respawns after about 2 fossils (about 2-3minutes) excavated. This makes excavating fossils to be a big pain when there are a bunch on the same wall. I tried to drill very little when a rogue vivosaur is nearby and it works as long as the vivosaur is not the aggressive type.
The only thing that is good about excavating is that you can bring up to two other pals to dig for you. This works as long as the fossil been excavated at least once before and it is not a quest from the missionator.
Many choices but I only use a few of them. |
Vehicle - Gimmick
There are six types of vehicles to buy and two from the AR
cards (on their website). Each one can be modified for color, car parts,
excavating parts and items. There is a max weight on each vehicle and cannot be
exceeded. The cars can be built for speed, excavating fossils or battle items.
There is a racing game with the vehicles. There are very few
races (against people) during the story line. The challenge routes include
racing to the end of the course to fight a vivosaur and excavate a fossil. These
tend to be rare fossils.
Took quite a bit of time to completely finish the game and recruiting all paleo pals to super paleo pals. |
Overall, I enjoyed the game. Most of the battling I put on
auto and did something else in the process. It be nice for a speed up battle
while on auto because some of the tournaments can take up to half an hour.
The story was great. I liked it and there was much to do. I
used to like excavating fossils but now I just avoid trying to collect
everything. The rogue vivosaurs respawn too fast for me to do much excavating.
I was wondering where all these rogue vivosaurs were coming from considering
that it has to be revived somehow for them to run around. I can't release
vivosaurs I acquired so I am not sure how they are in the wild as such.
A tip to those still in the story, do not level the other
wardens vivosaur to max until after the Warden's cup. It can be difficult to
beat them without training the other paleo pals vivosaurs to almost max.
It was not the best game in the series but it is okay.
Recommended for story, not game play.
